I’m old enough to remember using our 4-foot-long, hardback Collier’s encyclopedia set.

I think every family had a set in the 80s.

Even as a child, I loved to just grab a random volume and flip through, looking at the pictures and cross-sections and maps and reading about random topics.

I was amazed at how they were able to provide so much detail across so many endless topics.

And then . . . Microsoft Encarta was released on CD and changed everything.

That leap from physical encyclopedias to digital knowledge mirrors what we're seeing in OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5 announcement yesterday.

I’ve been talking about reasoning models like DeepSeek and OpenAI o1/o3 models.

They don’t just give you answers . . . they walk you through the reasoning process to show you how it arrived at the answer.

But they're still separate models — you have to choose between reasoning and non-reasoning.

With ChatGPT 5, rather than having to choose between non-reasoning AND a separate reasoning model, OpenAI is going to combine them into a single model going forward.

In other words, reasoning will be integrated into all models.

While I love the reasoning models, they take a bit longer to process—and they cost more.

Sometimes, I just want a quick, cheap answer, and I don’t need the overhead and cost of the entire thought process.

From what I gather, the new ChatGPT 5 will include reasoning, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to use “reasoning” for every response.

I don’t want to wait those few extra cycles for a quick answer.

So my guess is that it’s either going to be an automatic setting or you can choose whether to include reasoning in your response.
