My Four Cents on the Merger Between Grammarly and Coda

If you've not read, Grammarly acquired Coda.

Even though we recently changed branding from Coda Magic to troylarson.com / Business AutomAItion™ Mastery, we are still 100% Coda fanatics.

We're still creating packs (we have a REALLY awesome HUGE pack in development right now!).

We're using Coda to manage our AI Assistants.

My main issue with Coda is this When I talk about Coda to others, most people don’t know what it is and I have to describe it as “it’s like Notion.”

For such an amazing product, the market traction has been abysmal.

So when I first read about the acquisition yesterday, I had a visceral negative reaction.

GRAMMARLY? The grammar checker? Really??!!!

But then I did my research.

(Keep in mind these are estimates — don’t take them as gospel.)

Grammarly

I was blown away by Grammarly’s valuation.

Our company used it up until recently, but I would have never guessed a $13B valuation.

I assumed that it was stuck in the Dark Ages, soon to be forgotten by new AI generation.

But apparently not.

Maybe I’m being overly-simplistic, but it appears that Coda has just wedded themselves to a $13B juggernaut that lives in millions of browsers and apps all over the world.

It lives in Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

And Grammarly has a fantastical marketing machine.

So what would this look like?

With the launch of Coda Brain, all of your data, company information, sales, customer information could be ingested into Coda.

Because Grammarly is integrated to all of your apps and browsers, you would have access to your Coda Brain when creating any content.

Instead of going to Coda, looking for the data, copy and pasting . . .

. . . you could simply type into the Grammarly pop-up, “Add my 2023 sales figures for men’s shirts.” . . . IN ANY APP.

And so my confusion has morphed into optimism.

I’m hoping that this will shift the momentum for Coda—both from a roadmap and marketing perspective—into a heavyweight contender.

Troy's One Cool Thing of the Day

The Bottom Line: Grammarly's acquisition of Coda represents a strategic move to expand its capabilities and redefine productivity tools for the AI era. By integrating Coda’s advanced features, Grammarly is set to enhance its platform, offering users a more robust and efficient suite of tools.
