I don’t know how many video streaming services you pay for, but I have a LOT.
Netflix, Paramount, Hulu, Amazon Prime . . . and then add-ons for some of them.
But I didn’t sign up all at once—like a slowly boiling frog, it happened gradually over time.
And because you’re paying $8 here and $12 here . . . it can be shocking to see $100/month for video streaming.
I see the same thing happening with AI, but worse.
It’s not that we’re subscribing to tons of AI services (you may be—I’m not judging!), but each of these services is pay-as-you-go.
And it’s not $2 per prompt — it’s less than one cent.
It’s almost insidious how AI costs can creep up on you.
And as we start deploying the “billions of AI assistants” that Zuckerberg talked about a couple of weeks ago, AI costs are going to skyrocket exponentially.
Let’s be honest—AI companies aren’t pushing AI assistants out of the goodness of their precious little hearts.
It’s a license to print money.
This week, we’re diving headfirst into the thrilling and dangerous world of managing AI costs! Mastering this skill is going to be absolutely crucial in the next few years.
Let me start today with some transparency and mindset.
How much does our team spend on AI?
With a team of 9 people working across several clients, including social media management, email generation (NOT THIS ONE LOL), software development . . .
Tool | Monthly Cost | Why? |
---|---|---|
OpenAI Plus | $20 | Needed for AI assistants and API access |
TeamGPT | $20 | This tool allows our entire team to use ONE API key. They can use OpenAI Plus without needing a separate account. |
Claude.ai | $20 | I personally use this strategically for specific use cases (I’ll discuss this later). |
Perplexity Pro | $40 | My search engine of choice. I use Perplexity about 85% of the time vs. Google. |
OpenAI Usage | $83 | This is our actual AI usage across the team. |
Is that “a lot?”
Let me first give you my mindset.
I have a full-time job, my entire team is based in the Philippines and English is not their first language
$163/month gives me and my team:
24/7 interpreter
24/7 translator
24/7 copywriter
24/7 proofreader
24/7 coding assistant
24/7 researcher
My team is not only allowed but encouraged to use AI whenever and wherever they need it.
If they want to use ChatGPT to write me a Slack message and it sounds like ChatGPT . . . I DON’T CARE.
The team is insanely productive compared to no-AI.
Do I need to spend $100/month on video streaming services? Absolutely not.
Do I need to spend $163/month on AI? Right now . . .absolutely YES.
