Amazon Bedrock's Powerful AI Feature That Protects Your Data (For Pennies!)
AI Assistants Are Powerful—But Without Guardrails, They’re a Data Breach Waiting to Happen.

It’s tax time and since 2022, I’ve REALLY hated doing my taxes.
I was a victim of tax fraud.
Someone in a different state filed a tax return using my Social Security number to get a refund.
I had to spend HOURS at the IRS office getting it sorted out.
And for the rest of my life, every year I have to wait for the IRS to send me a special PIN number before I can file.
It’s reinforced to me that there are really bad actors in this world.
When we think about building AI assistants for our business, we have to consider the reality of bad actors getting access to stuff they shouldn’t.
One of the major challenges with an AI assistant is making sure bad actors can’t game the system to get sensitive data.
Amazon Bedrock solves this problem with a feature called Guardrails.
It’s a fantastic feature that “wraps” your AI with the protective bubble that lets you decide what to allow/not allow.
Even if your AI assistant returns sensitive data, Guardrails provide an additional layer of protection.
In this screenshot, you can see examples of PII (Personally Identifiable Information) you can block:

In addition to protecting sensitive information, you can also add guardrails on:
Specific topics
Profanity
Specific words and phrases
Sensitive topics
Depending on your use case, the costs aren’t bad—depending on how concerned you are with data exposure.
The charge per 1,000 text units:
A text unit can contain up to 1000 characters. If a text input is more than 1000 characters, it is processed as multiple text units, each containing 1000 characters or less.
For example, if a text input contains 5600 characters, it will be charged for 6 text units.
Guardrail policy | Price per 1,000 text units |
Content filters (text content)* | $0.15 |
Denied topics | $0.15 |
Contextual grounding check | $0.1 |
Sensitive information filters (PII) | $0.1 |
Sensitive information filters (regular expression) | Free |
Word filters | Free |
Example 1: Customer Support AI Assistant
Scenario: A small business uses an AI assistant to handle customer inquiries. Each customer query and response averages 500 characters.
Text Units Calculation: Since 1 text unit equals 1,000 characters, each interaction (query + response) counts as 1 text unit.
Daily Usage: If the assistant processes 200 interactions daily, that's 200 text units per day.
Monthly Cost:
Content Filters: $0.15 per 1,000 text units → 200×30=6,000200×30=6,000 text units monthly → 6\times 0.15=$0.90.
Sensitive Information Filters (PII): $0.10 per 1,000 text units → 6\times 0.10=$0.60.
Total Monthly Cost: $1.50.
Example 2: Marketing Content Review
Scenario: An AI assistant generates marketing content drafts for review. Each draft averages 2,000 characters.
Text Units Calculation: Each draft is split into two text units (since it exceeds 1,000 characters).
Weekly Usage: The business generates 50 drafts weekly → 50×2=10050×2=100 text units weekly.
Monthly Cost:
Content Filters: $0.15 per 1,000 text units → 100×4=400100×4=400 text units monthly → 0.4\times 0.15=$0.06.
Denied Topics Check: $0.15 per 1,000 text units → 0.4\times 0.15=$0.06.
Total Monthly Cost: $0.12.
It does require you to use Amazon Bedrock as your model, but it’s a feature worth considering when you have concerns about data sensitivity.
